Cornish Duck - The Next Chapter

Cornish Duck is a long established Name in Cornwall for our award winning farm produce.

Cornish Duck has had a rejuvenated boost from New Owners, Kristian Gourlay and his young family.
Having purchased the Company from the Olvers officially in May 2020, but the training process for both Kelley and Kristian spanned more than a year previous to hand over.  

Their predecessors, Tanya and Roger Olver helped guide and teach The Gourlays about all things Duck. The incubation process and purchase of the hatchery is planned for 2023 when Tanya has expertly taught Kelley how to run this very delicate part of the business. 

Kristian and his young family sold everything they had of value and placed all their Duck eggs in Cornish Duck’s basket, taking the leap into the World of Farming livestock, rather than their usual growing of Fungi. 

This has been a mammoth task for the family, moving all aspects of Cornish Duck from Terras Farm in Grampound, over to Tremanor Farm, in Fowey. Covid 19 pandemic has been particularly painful for the Company because of the nature of the business relying solely on Farmer’s markets and Restaurants within the County.
 
The young family struggled to sell their produce with freezers bulging at the seams, Thus the birth of Fowey Farmshop on their land in Fowey. 

This has been a lifeline for the Company and the new focus for 2020 is to become more reliant on our customers eating the duck at home, rather than in restaurants as they have always done. 

A little bit about the History of Cornish Duck Co explained to Kristian and Kelley by Roger. 

Roger explained  “The initial concept of a duck farm was the result of a casual conversation after dining at Tabb’s restaurant. Nigel Tabb, in his endless pursuit of excellence, told of his frustrated efforts to source high quality locally bred duck. Realising the potential of the market, Roger and Tanya Olver began researching traditional duck breeds and the viability of a small-scale artisan operation.

Our foundation stock was originally sourced from a breeder that had spent years crossing traditional breeds of duck to optimise flavour. Eventually, we purchased a hatchery and began breeding our own duck, the ‘Terras Duck’.

We have traditionally sold at local farmers’ markets and to top class restaurants across Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. These include Jamie Oliver's Fifteen Cornwall at Watergate Bay and Paul Ainsworth at Number 6, Padstow“
